Saint Clare of Assisi

A small object imbued with history, faith, and symbolism. 

This vintage keychain features the iconography of Saint Clare of Assisi, a fascinating figure from the Middle Ages and the close spiritual companion of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Born in Assisi around 1193, Clare came from a noble family and was expected, like many young women of her time, to follow the path that had been chosen for her. But deeply moved by the teachings of Francis of Assisi, she chose to renounce her privileged life to devote her existence to poverty, prayer, and the service of others.

She secretly left her family in 1212 and joined Francis, becoming the foundress of what would become the order of the Poor Clares. She then spent most of her life at the convent of San Damiano, near Assisi, where she also wrote a rule of life for her community, a historic first for a woman in the Church.

In religious art, Saint Clare is often depicted holding a monstrance, a symbol of her deep devotion to the Eucharist. This depiction refers to the tradition according to which she faced the soldiers threatening San Damiano by raising the Blessed Sacrament before them.

A small vintage object that can obviously be used as a keychain, but also as a small decorative talisman, attached to a bag or incorporated into a collection of antique religious curiosities.
